Jesus is Our Nourishment

Hebrews 5:11-14, Hebrews 2:1, John 15:1-17, Psalm 1

These few verses represent a break from the continuous narrative of the book of Hebrews. The author has been writing about Christ as High Priest, and seemingly as they look to go on to what is next they pause for a second.

In verse 11 the audience is described as becoming dull of hearing. The word dull used here comes from the greek term nothroi which means sluggish or slothful. The author is not calling the immature Christian unintelligent, rather in this case the audience is being lazy. While they have had the opportunity to grow in their relationship with Christ they have been lazy and neglected growth.

The author draws a parallel between growing Christians and growing children. They write that milk is needed for the young and immature while solid food is for the mature and more developed. The author is desiring to teach the reader what he deems to be concepts equal to solid food, to which he is fearful that the sluggish immature Christians may not be able to grasp find benefit in.

The author wants to continue to teach and exhort the audience, but due to their spiritual immaturity this may be difficult.

Where in your faith and relationship with Jesus are you being sluggish? Where have you had the opportunity to grow but instead have neglected it? The Word is here for us to learn from. Solid food is available. We must seek Christ because he is our nourishment, he helps us grow. We must be people who understand where growth and wisdom come from and pursue that daily. There is plenty to learn, so take a few moments to identify where you can take steps this week to deepen your relationship with Christ and understanding of the scripture.
