The Continued Covenant through Moses
Acts 7:17-34, Psalm 105:26-38, Exodus 3:7-15, John 1:16-17 Hebrews 3:1-6
Moses was greatly revered in the eyes of the Jewish people. Moses was the one who heard the big booming voice of God we all long to hear. However, in their reverence of Moses, the Pharisees and Jewish leaders missed Jesus. Moses was great in his deeds, but Moses was not the end. Or the beginning.
Moses, in Exodus chapter 7, being sent was told this by God, “I AM WHO I AM. ..say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.” (Exodus 7:14) The Jewish people clung to the story and person of Moses, but in their awe, they forgot the one who sent Moses. God! Jesus tells us in Revelation that, “I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” (Revelation 22:13) That is why Stephen is pointing to Moses so that they understand Jesus was there when Moses was sent. God sent Moses as he sent Jesus. The writer of Hebrews emphasizes the same idea by saying, “Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant….but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son.” Moses is good, Jesus is better. Paul is good, Jesus is better. Your village leader is good, but Jesus is better. The church is good but Jesus is better.
Everything points back to Jesus. What is it about us that settles for the messenger, but not who the messenger is pointing to? Moses talked about Jesus. Everything in and through Moses was to point to the God who had sent him and was sending another. In our arrogance, we often miss the bigger picture, just like the Pharisees did in the first century.
Where in your life are you wrestling to see the bigger picture God is painting in your life? God promised to deliver his people from Egypt and he promised to deliver us from sin and death. Why is it hard to believe that he will keep his promise to complete the good work in you? The Great I AM - His Spirit dwells in you, do you believe that he is working for you for your good and for his glory? Lay down your worries and doubts and worship the one who brought you out of the grave.
