John 1:1-5
No other gospel starts as John does. John is the only non-synoptic gospel. Which is a fancy way of saying John has different material, focus, and events that he covers compared to Mark, Matthew, and Luke. So why does John’s gospel start so differently?
In actuality, John is laying the foundation for the rest of His gospel by starting with the divinity of Jesus.
Jesus is not just a really great guy; He is God. Not only God, but it is in Him and through Him that all things were created. This is a significant foundation for not only the audience of John, but for every Christian out there. The One who made all things became His own creation to bring about salvation. Is this not the crux of our faith? That Jesus’ humanness and His perfect life, one we are called to live, but fail so miserably at, was the sacrifice that atoned for our sins, and it was Jesus’ godliness that led Him and now us to resurrection life.
John is giving us the end in the beginning so we can see the significance of Jesus life and feel the weight of His death and resurrection.
As you go through Lent and meditate on the meaning of Good Friday and Easter, would you remember the significance of Jesus’ deity and humanness in it all?
