Matthew 9:35-38, Luke 10:2-12, John 4:31-38

Jesus sent out dozens upon dozens to preach and teach—the twelve disciples and a larger group of seventy-two (Luke 10:1–2). Through this commissioning, we see Jesus’ character: His compassionate heart for the lost to hear the Gospel, as God desires no one to perish (2 Peter 3:9). God wants to protect us, as the Good Shepherd, from sin, death, and hell. As He has saved us from the punishment we deserve, may we go out to those who are perishing so they may be saved by the Lord.

Imagine you are sitting here with Jesus now as He told the disciples, “Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest” (John 4:35). God’s mission has not changed; there is still more laboring to do, and would you rejoice in this work you are offered alongside our amazing God? (John 4:36). There is a ripe harvest of people who do not know about saving the power of Jesus and the necessity of His sacrifice to save them from their sins.

Joining in the harvest can be difficult, whether it's a fear of rejection, feeling inadequate to convey the gospel, or feeling the weight of the message you’re sharing. If you're worried about the treatment you may receive for preaching the good news, remember Jesus warned us of wolves, and many people did not accept Jesus either. Yet, the compassionate thing to do, just as Jesus modeled to us, is to warn others of the coming judgment. Look with love to those who are sheep without a shepherd, and invite them to know our God. (Matthew 9:36). Just as you once were, so are so many others.

Remember, our preaching or clarity is not what brings salvation; that belongs solely to God. We can find solace because God is sovereign and good. God brings about faith through the preaching of His word, and we as His disciples can share the Gospel with joy. He will provide people who are eager to hear the good news, and even those who may reject Jesus initially may be reached through the sharing down the road.

Trust in Him, pray earnestly, and take heart against the opposition. We need people on the frontlines. God has equipped you with the Holy Spirit and His Word. Let this be an encouragement and motivator, as God has good works prepared for you, the blessing of bringing others the Gospel. (Romans 10:14-15).
